Painting with Colored Ice

Painting with ice is cheap and A LOT of fun… heres how we did it:

Add water to ice tray, add a few drops of food coloring (I used food coloring gel), add sticks (i used lollipop sticks), and then put into freezer.

When I was ready to use them I took them out of the freezer(this just so happened to be like 2 weeks after I made them but it obviously doesn’t take that long for them to freeze… sometimes its great to make things ahead of time even when you don’t need it)
Deen liked examing his new art material. He felt the ice with his fingers and see how the color comes out onto his fingers. He actually enjoyed that I left them in the ice tray since he could pull them out and fit them back in (like a puzzle)

Here’s his final product
See how vibrant and colorful the colored ice cubes were…
Great, easy activity.

I just refreezed the ice cubes and can use it some other time :)

We did this for our open ended art theme today. (the theme was mixed mediums)

I've seen it on so many blogs, and I keep telling myself that I have to try it out. Deen looks very pleased playing with this painting set :)

The painting turned out really nice! This activity was a big hit at our house too, and I've got new ice cubes in the freezer just waiting to go on the next warm day (it's raining a lot here lately). I think in the future I'll just keep some of these made up all the time! Thanks for sharing!

This is a great idea – I love art that explores other senses as it increases both the fun and the educational value for the child. I write about exploring creativity in toddlers and young children on http://www.kiddingabout.com and may link to this as it is a really nice activity!
