Sensory Bins

Sensory Treasure Hunt

Today, I would like to share an entertaining sensory activity that I have been doing with my kids for the past few weeks.

I purchased a few small themed items from the scrapbooking store, placed them on a white piece of paper, took a picture, labeled them using Photoshop (you can use any image editor), and then I printed it out.

In this instance I used beans and hid the zoo themed animals in the beans. I placed the cards on the side of the tray so that my kids knew what they were looking for and were then able to match the items to their pictures.

When the kids were done playing with this I placed the cards and animals in a small container. Each time I create an activity like this I place the cards and items in a container and stack them on top of one another. I can then take them out and hide them in a big bowl/container with a different sensory medium.

The items can be placed in water, rice, beans, oats, pom poms, sand, and whatever else you have on hand.

What I love most about this is that you can mix it up in endless ways.
Here is another  Sensory “Treasure” hunts that I recently set out for the kids:

Doctor themed items hidden within rice.

If you are not able to make the cards then you can still hide random items and get your children to find them and name what they are:

Here I hid dragonflies and little bears. When the kids would find an item that was not a pom pom I would ask them what it is and they would tell me what it was called as well as the color it was.

It really does not matter what you hide in there because the kids have a blast searching for anything out of the norm. This is an excellent activity to keep your kids distracted when you need a few minutes to yourself, or to cook, or clean.

Bugs Themed Sensory Bin

in Sensory Bins

Our theme this week was bugs so I set out a Bugs themed sensory bin. I have been collecting different types of bugs for a while in order to use them for our sensory bin.
I died rice green to make grass. (I need to find a better way of coloring rice in bulk.)
I added some big ladybugs as well as some small ladybugs.
I placed some butterflies and some dragonflies around the bin as well as on the tree.
I put in some cups for scooping, pouring, and sorting.

Aaliya used the bugs sensory bin in many waysShe felt the rice and bugs with her feet.
She pushed the cups under the rice and hid some of the bugs.

She did some sorting by placing all the baby(small) ladybugs in a cup.

My kids have LOVED playing with the dinosaur sensory bin that I made for them. All I put in is some sand, some dinosaurs, a tree, and some “dinosaur eggs”. I presented the bin to them like above. I left 1 dinosaur egg open so they could see that there was a “baby” inside. They […]
