Llama Llama misses mama by Anna Dewdney is about little llama’s first day at school.
Llama’s mama wakes him up early for school, he meets the children and his new teacher and after mama llama settles him in she leaves. First llama is worried
“Strange new teacher.
Strange new toys.
Lots of kids and lots of noise!
What would Llama like to do?
Llama Llama feels so new . . .”
Little llama looks around at all the activities and games the other children are participating in but llama llama misses mama! Little llama’s teacher tries to reassure him that mama will be back soon and the children try to encourage him to play. Little llama eventually realises that he can love school AND love mama.
This book is perfect for this time of the year when children are going to (and back to) school. The book validates the feelings children have when leaving their mother and going to school. The fear, the newness, not knowing what is supposed to happen, feeling overwhelmed, wondering if mama is coming back.
My son and I love this book because children can so easily relate. It helped us transition to playschool because Deen could explain to me how he felt like llama llama. He was very happy to tell me, “but see… mama llama comes back!”. The words flow perfectly and the pictures are really cute.
All the llama llama books are really nice and they are all on our wish list!
Another thing that made his transition to play school easier is a song by Hap Palmer called “My Mommy comes back” which is a beautiful song about how sometimes mommy leaves for a little while but how she will always come back. Here are the lyrics:
“Sometimes my mommy takes me over
To another friends house to play
Sometimes I only stay a little while
Sometimes I stay all day, but
Chorus: My mommy comes back
She always comes back
She always comes back to get me
My mommy comes back
She always comes back
She never would forget me
Sometimes I worry when she leaves me
I hope she won’t be gone too long
But when I’m with my friends and having fun
I soon forget she’s gone and
Sometimes I visit with my grandma
While my mommy goes somewhere
We back some cookies and we read a book
And rock in the rocking chair, and
You can listen to a sample of this song on Itunes or here and sing it to your child. I used to sing it constantly.
