Deen loves to help me bake, especially if it has anything to do with one of his favorite cartoon like figures. In this case it was Barney.
I prefer to use box mixes when baking with Deen because it is just that much easier for me. I can then focus on my camera better him without having to worry about the 999 other ingredients in the recipe…(or worse yet… forgetting one of them!)
I first get everything ready for Deen so that all he needs to do is dump the ingredients in. If he was older and could measure then I would have all our supplies out and would ask him to measure as he added the ingredients.
See how easy and calm this is…. All he needs to do is throw the ingredients in…
Mix mix mix…
Separate each cupcake wrapper and put them in the cupcake tin…
Wow, who knew that there were so many learning opportunities in such a simple activity?
Separate the mixture…
Bake…
Cover in frosting…
Sprinkle on some sprinkles…
They definitely look better than they tasted….
I don’t like the box icing at all…
Deen didn’t seem to mind though! (and that’s all that really matters anyway!)
Super deeeee duper! Hehehe. We love Barney at our house, too.
Haha, they do remind me of Barney!
Thanks so much for following! Your son is sooooooooooo cute. š Looks like he had fun baking those cupcakes.:)
Hi Nadia,
Even simple boxed mixes can be a challenge for kids to prepare! I think itĆ¢ā¬ā¢s great that you let Deen get involved in the kitchen, especially since research shows that kids who cook together with their families are more likely to consider portions and learn important skills, such as teamwork, following instructions, math, and even fine motor skills. Kids who eat meals together are also less likely to be obese and do better in school. ThatĆ¢ā¬ā¢s why I work with The Kids Cook Monday, a new program started by the Healthy Monday campaigns that encourages families to cook and eat meals together every week. To find out more about The Kids Cook Monday, check out our website at http://www.healthymonday.org/the-kids-cook-monday/
WeĆ¢ā¬ā¢re looking for families to take on the challenge of preparing meals together each week and sharing their experiences on their blogs. If youĆ¢ā¬ā¢re interested in getting involved, please email me at TheKidsCookMonday@gmail.com. Thanks!

Hi Mayo, I will definitely check your site out. I love to cook and bake with my son because I can see how much he enjoys it! I’d love to see some of your ideas.
Great activity to do with the little ones, Mouse also loves baking and mixing. I must admit we also bought the Barney cupcake mix a while ago and I was a bit let down in the taste and texture of the cupcakes. I have a very easy recipe that I can email you for homebaked cupcakes, that is what we use now š
Trudie I would love the recipe! I really dislike the taste of these prepackaged character ones. I really like the chocolate with choc chip cupcake mix we get here in SA though š
