Build a Number Train Activity for Kids

Learning number sense is a very important concept for learners as they begin their numeracy journey. Number sense helps learners with subitizing, counting and then eventually builds up to concepts such as addition and subtraction.

A fun number sense activity is this ice cream sundae matching printable activity. In this activity, learners will also match the different number representations on the ice cream sundae parts to build an ice cream sundae.

What is Included in this Number Train Activity for Kids?

This printable covers numbers from 1 to 10. Learners will be able to practice their number sense by using different number representations from numbers 1 to 10.

This printable includes:

• Numbers 1 to 10 train engines.
• 5 train carriages for each number in different number representations.
• Includes color and a printer-friendly black and white version.

Learning about Number Sense

One way to improve number sense in your learners is to expose them to the different number representations that are generally used to represent the numbers.

Some examples of different forms of number representations are:

• Tally marks
• Dice
• Dominoes
• Counting objects
• Finger counting
• Ten frame
• Base 10 blocks

These are some of the different number representations that you can use to introduce to your learners about number sense.

These 1 to 20 number puzzles are a great way for learners to practice and understand number sense in a hands-on and engaging manner! Learners will identify the different number representations and put the puzzle pieces together to reveal a mystery picture.

• Laminator
• Printer
• Scissors

Preparing the Number Train Activity

Print the pages in color or black and white.

Alternatively, you can print the black and white versions onto colored cardstock for an extra pop of color.

Laminate the pages if desired. I highly recommend this step if you are using the printable with several learners.

Cut apart to create the carriages and the train engine.

Using the Number Sense Train Printable Activity

Present your learners with the trains and carriages.

Explain to your learners what they are expected to do. You can demonstrate an example of what must be done.

Your learners will have to match the different number representations on the carriages to the corresponding number on the train engine.

Since this activity does include a lot of pieces to match, I would recommend only introducing 1 to 2 numbers at a time so your learner doesn’t get overwhelmed.

As they get more used to the activity and are familiar with what they are expected to do as well as the idea of number sense, you can give learners more numbers and pieces to work with.

Differentiating this Number Activity

As always, it’s very important to be able to differentiate an activity for learners.

In this case, differentiating this activity is extremely easy.

You can choose which numbers your learners need to work on and only give them those numbers.

Alternatively, if your learner needs additional practice on a particular number representation, for instance, ten frames, then you can use only that carriage and get them to match it up to the corresponding number.

This activity is especially versatile since it provides you with a lot of differentiation opportunities to allow for growth and practice where it is exactly required for your learner.
