Ice Cream Alphabet Matching Game
Learning the various parts of letter recognition and beginning sounds is incredibly important for preschoolers and kindergarteners. They are learning the beginning steps to reading and writing. This alphabet matching activity encompasses all of this and more.
Presented as a game, children will be encouraged to play and in turn strengthen math and fine motor skills.

This ice cream activity focuses on letter recognition, both upper and lowercase, as well as beginning sounds through a variety of different ‘ice cream scoops’.
This preschool alphabet activity is full of versatility to ensure that your child is learning at their own pace. You can apply differentiation by only having children match some of the elements or extend as far as matching all of the pieces at one time.
While children pick up the various pieces, and set them down in place, they are also strengthening fine motor skills that are necessary for skills such as zipping a zipper and tying their shoes. Not to mention holding a pencil properly.

Materials Needed
This alphabet matching activity includes both a cone and a cup as the base, children can choose what they would like. These pieces have the letters on them. This includes both upper and lowercase letters. Next is the ice cream scoops.
There are a variety of colors that include uppercase letters, lowercase letters and pictures of objects to represent beginning sounds.

Start prepping by printing the activity, which can be found at the end of this post. Next, cut out each piece of the ice cream set. To preserve the life of this activity, I would suggest laminating each piece. When it is all ready, lay out the activity for your child.
You can start off small, by strictly offering the ice cream cones and a few of the scoops. If your child is ready, you can present all of the parts.

When To Use This Ice Cream Alphabet Activity
This alphabet matching game can be used in preschool, kindergarten or first grade. This is a great activity for literacy centers, morning tubs or for early finishers. Children will love completing this activity independently, in pairs or even small groups.
The fun colors and ice cream theme will encourage children to love this activity and in turn strengthen important literacy and fine motor skills that are necessary.
BONUS Alphabet Popsicles
Also included with this download is a popsicle alphabet matching game. It is a smaller version of the ice cream matching game, but assists in the same alphabet matching concept. There is a piece of the popsicle for uppercase, one for lowercase and one for beginning sound.

These are a great way to learn a letter of the alphabet. They’ll work on lower case letters and upper case letters and have visual cues with these alphabet cards.
This is a great activity to help with letter formation and to help younger learners succeed. My kids do really good with creative ideas like this one! You can use these for a fun letter matching game or a great way to encourage alphabet fun. The more letter matching activities for younger children, the better!
