Have you ever wondered what the benefits of building blocks for toddlers could be? Why do kids build block towers? This post goes into 5 benefits of building blocks and gives you a closer look at why building block towers is important. Little kids feel so accomplished as they see their block tower get higher and higher. They have to be so precise and they can see visually how many blocks they have accomplished. Then, when it tips over they laugh and do it all over again. Children use many skills to build up these blocks.
Benefits of Building Blocks
My 1 year olds favorite toy right now is definitely her blocks. At 21 months old she can stack up to 9. She needs no prompting from me. After watching her do this daily I wondered why her mind seems to be craving these type of toddler activities. I mean, building blocks is hard work for a tiny toddler.
It takes a lot of concentration…
And when it falls… she giggles. Then she starts again.
Building blocks is one of the best educational toys for toddlers that develops multiple skills in a child.
Benefits of building blocks include:
- Hand eye coordination – The child has to learn to place the block on the block tower in such a way that does not topple the tower.
- Teaches kids early math and engineering skills through hands on learning. Kids definitely learn better when they can feel objects and the best way to learn geometric shapes is to feel each and every corner. They learn how heavy the blocks are and then they learn exactly how to place the block in order for it not to fall.
- Spatial awareness
- Improves fine motor skills
- Enhances logical thinking capability – it provides mental stimulation and teaches kids cause and effect. For example, if she places the block too close to the edge the tower topples over.
I recommend the following blocks:
Haba First Blocks – This is like the one I have except that mine came with a wooden wagon.
Giant Building Blocks by Imagiplay– I personally LOVE the cardboard blocks but unfortunately they do not sell them here in South Africa. I used to play with those as a child.
Melissa & Doug 100 piece wooden block set – I don’t have this one yet but I would love to purchase this. This is great for an older child.

Blocks are great fun for all ages! My daughter still plays with hers, and after 3.5 years and about 4 different types, we have quite the collection. 🙂
Have you seen the “Peekaboo” ones? They have the alphabet on them, which also makes them double as a learning tool.
