Check out this fun alphabet water play for toddlers! It’s such a fun and simple way to get them excited about learning their letters. They’ll be having so much fun “slapping the alphabet” that they won’t even realize that they’re actually learning at the same time.
This activity is great for early learners but don’t be surprised if the older kids want to give it a try as well! Kids love getting the chance to make a little bit of an innocent mess with water.
Alphabet Slap – Alphabet Water Play for Toddlers and Kids
The best part about this simple water activity is that you can play this indoors or outside as well. All you need is a contained water source and an anxious child who’s ready to go!
While I mentioned earlier that older kids can play, even this simple version was pretty simple for my six-year-old daughter. How do they grow up so fast?!
The key to finding the balance for this fun water play for toddlers is to make certain that it’s simple enough that they’ll have fun playing it without making it overcomplicated to where they’re going to love interest. Finding that balance is key!

How to use this water play for toddlers
For toddlers and younger kids, it’s really quite simple. Have all the foam letters in the water and have them holding onto the plastic shovel/spoon. Call out a letter from the alphabet and let them scour the water and “smack” it when they see it.
You can also have them “scoop” out the letters as well. The choice is really up to you.
If you have older kids, make it a little more challenging for them to play. Put laminated sight words in the water and have them scoop them out as you say them.
Or you can have your child build an equation and say it out loud and then splay the number that is the answer. (10-7=?)
This will not only have them working their brain but also working on their analytical skills, too!
Be ready…there are going to be some big splashes happening for sure!

Make certain to let your child have fun with this simple water activity. It’s a great way to work on their listening skills, their fine motor skills, and their ability to even work on doing math in their head.
