Earth Day Activities
Earth day is celebrated annually on April 22. On this day, in order to show our support for environmental protection we can teach our little learners about the importance of the environment and the ways we can help in conserving and protecting Earth.
Best of all, we can incoporate Earth Day into our curriculum by using Earth Day themed activities, math and literacy centers. This allows learners to learn more about our wonderful Earth while also building up their numeracy and literacy skills.
Earth Day Literacy Center – CVC Word Sorting Activity
First, grab your free printable at the end of this post.
To prep this center, simply print, laminate and cut apart. This is a relatively low-prep center and is ideal for a quick and fun activity to put together.
The printable include two Earth faces and CVC words on little recycling bins. There are a total of 32 CVC words on the recycling bins.
To present this activity, give your learner the 2 Earth faces; happy and sad.
The learner will pick up one recycling bin at a time, which contains the CVC word on it and will read out the word using the skills and knowledge that they have picked up.
- If the CVC word is correct and makes sense the learner will place the card under the ‘Happy Earth’ face.
- If the CVC word is incorrect and does not make sense, the learner will place the cards under the ‘Sad Earth’ face.
In this way, the learner will continue to work their way through the cards until they finish off their pile of cards or they tire of the sorting activity.
The printable also includes a recording sheet in which the learner can write down whether the CVC word they picked up is real or silly. This allows for accountability for your learners. If your learners, however aren’t ready for writing, simply present your learner with the sorting activity alone and let them have fun learning and sorting!
Teaching About Earth Day
Since, this activity is meant to be an Earth Day activity, this printable can be extended as well. The printable includes a blank version of the Earth faces (without the text). Educators can use these two faces and ask students to give them examples of situations that help our Earth and situations that damage our Earth. This can be used to create an anchor chart as well.
You can also point out certain activities that are being carried out in school, and ask learners whether these activities are helpful or damaging to our Earth. For instance, plastic bottles being thrown into the garbage instead of being recycled, litter not being discarded properly, leaking taps, stagnant water, and so on. This will bring about an awareness of activities that can be damaging to our environment. Educators can also instill a sense of awareness on the importance of preserving and protecting our lovely Earth.
