How to Make a Leprechaun Trap
For this craft project, you will need a coffee can, some construction paper, glue, scissors, and a few other supplies. Follow these simple steps to make your own leprechaun trap, but first, make sure you have all the supplies you need!
The Legend of the Leprechaun Trap
According to Irish folklore, leprechauns are mischievous, small, and quick creatures who are known for their love of gold and their ability to grant wishes. Some legends even say that if you catch a leprechaun, it will give you its pot of gold in exchange for its freedom.
Making a leprechaun trap is a way to try and catch a leprechaun and possibly get its pot of gold. Children often create traps using materials such as cardboard boxes, construction paper, and other craft supplies, and they may leave out small items such as gold coins or candy as bait.
While leprechauns are not real, making leprechaun traps can be a fun way for children to exercise their imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It also encourages them to learn more about Irish folklore and St. Patrick’s Day traditions. Additionally, the activity can promote teamwork and collaboration if children work on their traps together.

How to Make a Leprechaun Trap from a Shoebox
Here are the directions to make your very own leprechaun trap from a box!
Cut out a piece of green construction paper that is large enough to cover all sides of your box.
Glue the paper to the box. If necessary, trim the edges to ensure a neat fit.
Now it’s time to make your trap look attractive to leprechauns! Cut out some shamrocks, gold coins, or other St. Patrick’s Day symbols from your green and gold construction paper. Use glue to attach them to your box.
Draw small circles on yellow or gold paper to create gold “coins.” Cut out the coins and set aside.
Leprechauns love shiny objects, so bait your trap with your gold coins, beads, or other small, shiny objects that will attract their attention. You can also add some cotton balls or other fun objects to make the trap more inviting.
Knot one end of a long string to the top of your toothpick. Use the toothpick to prop the box open and your trap is complete!
Find a good spot to place your leprechaun trap, preferably somewhere where leprechauns might be tempted to go. You can also leave a note or a small gift to entice them into the trap.
Use the toothpick to keep one side of the trap open. Keep an eye on your trap and if you see a leprechaun, pull tight to trap the leprechaun!
Once you capture a leprechaun legend says that they just might show you where they have buried their treasure at the end of the rainbow so you will let them go!
