The Pioneer Kit is geared towards children starting at 16 months old and is the kit for 16, 17, and 18 month olds. Lovevery Kits grow with your child so while they won’t ONLY be playing with it during this age range, this is when the toy begins to match their developmental level. The toys are hand-picked and the kit is designed to support their growing skills around this year and a half age mark.
They are great for Montessori learning and play and helping to work on your chld’s development. They’re work on dexterity, building finger strength, and fine motor skills as well.

Lovevery Pioneer Play Kit
This kit provides the toys for children to work on their hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and problem-solving skills. Several of the toys provided give your little one the chance to work on a task that requires using both hands simultaneously as well as crossing the midline–which eventually helps children be able to coordinate both sides of their bodies to put on clothing and shoes.

Let’s take a closer look at the materials in the Pioneer kit.
What is Inside the Pioneer Play Kit by Lovevery
Fuzzy Bug Shrub
My daughter is really enjoying this toy. She likes to take the insects and put them inside the container, and then we talk about sticking them outside the container. We are able to practice language and vocabulary, especially positional words.
We also count how many insect pieces are going inside. This is perfect for hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
Threadable Bead Kit + Drawstring Bag
The threading kit is surprisingly something she LOVES, but it is also something that requires me to be close to her so that I can help her with it.
She is 18 months and hasn’t grasped the concept yet that once you place the piece onto the thread, you need to swap your hands so the piece goes down the string. She still loves it and is determined to do it.
The chunky beads make it easy for small hands to grasp and manipulate.
Race & Chase Ramp
Oh what a fun toy that I know she will continue to love for months to come! Alayna loves playing with this toy, but does have a little bit of difficulty with placing the cars straight before she releases them. This causes them to get stuck.
Though this may be frustrating to some children, this is age appropriate and what this toy is trying to teach them. It’s a great way to see cause and effect in action. She loves playing with it!
Wooden Stacking Peg Board
The wooden peg board is actually Alayna’s favorite toy from the whole Lovevery Pioneer Kit box. She loves working with me on the colors of the pieces and likes to place the pegs into the holes. When she attempts to place it the wrong way, she corrects herself and says, “Uh oh!” My heart melts every time.
There is so much learning going on here, from colors to counting and concentration while stacking the pegs.
Community Garden Puzzle
Baby girl hasn’t grasped the concept of this puzzle yet at 18 months, but this is something she will continue working on. She’s still learning how to position the piece correctly.
While she is still learning to complete the puzzle properly, those small muscles in her hands are getting stronger every time she uses the pincer grasp to remove the peg pieces and hold and manipulate them.
The puzzle is very beautifully made, and the five pieces are just right for a toddler needing a challenge, from chunky puzzles or single-shape puzzles.
The image of each piece is painted underneath, so children have the necessary support to begin solving these independently. A self-correcting toy is a great confidence booster for little ones!
Max and Nana Go To The Park Book
Lovevery’s books are fantastic. They are focused on real-life topics that littles can relate to. The book provided in the Pioneer kit is “Max and Nana Go to the Park.” We all know that toddlers have big emotions and are still learning how to manage them.
What happens when Max gets hurt at the park? This book provides a great introduction to managing emotions and learning more about feelings.
Play Guide
As always, an important component for parents and caregivers is the play guide! The guide is full of ideas for adults to really make the most of the provided materials, as well as what skills and abilities children are gaining at this stage in their development.
Are There Alternatives?
There are some products that you can purchase that are very similar to the Lovevery toys. I’ve linked some Lovevery dupes that you can purchase below, along with a short explanation or brief summary of each item.
Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wooden Lacing Beads
These lacing beads are large and come in a variety of shapes. Bonus: they also allow children to work on numbers and counting!
Counting Ladybugs or Insect Felt Storyboard
A felt board is a great way to get children working on placing items and removing them. This one is bug-themed, but there are lots of different felt theme pieces you can purchase! Plus, vertical play is great for large muscle development.
The counting ladybugs is a little more similar to the Fuzzy Bug Shrub because it has pieces that are able to be placed inside a container and removed. I love that the container contains a strap to carry it along wherever you go. The velcro flowers can be moved along the outside of the container as well. The set of 11 ladybugs promotes early math skills and counting to 10.
Battat Toddler Peg Board or Learning Resources Pegboard
Both of the brands for a peg board dupe are high quality and well-known. Each one has large, chunky pegs in a variety of shapes and colors. They also double as a threading toy, so it’s almost like a two-in-one! The hard bases make it easy for toddlers to set pegs in place. The variety of pegs allow children to work on color and shape sorting as well.
Wooden Racetrack or Kid Connection 2-in-1 Spiral & Racetrack
This wooden racetrack comes with four cars and also features a parking lot area at the top of the ramp. It’s a great place to store those cars when playtime is over.
Another option is the 2-in-1 spiral and racetrack. I love that this option also has the ballrun included. Cars and colorful balls are included. This one does make sounds but you can always remove the batteries if you do not prefer this feature.
Colorful Fruit & Vegetables Peg Puzzles or QUOKKA Toddler Puzzles Set of 6
These two puzzle options are excellent. The fruit & vegetable puzzles feature realistic images as well as he painted pictures below to support children’s independence. The pegs are thick and appropriate for the 16-18 month age range.
QUOKKA’s six-set option is definitely a more advanced puzzle once children have mastered the peg puzzle. But these puzzles are just so well made that I couldn’t help but feature them! There is a fruit and vegetable set and under each picture is an image of what the inside of that food looks like. You can definitely use these as valuable learning tools until your child is ready to attempt it as a puzzle.
As always, we love our Lovevery Play kits! The toys are high quality, safe and developmentally appropriate. You can’t go wrong with the Pioneer kit. The experts at Lovevery have made providing the best toys to our little ones so easy.
Lovevery does a great job with play kits as some of their other popular choices are Explorer Play Kit, Enthusiastic Play Kit, Helper Play Kit, Thinker Play Kit, Charmer Play Kit, Investigator Play Kit, and more.
