What are Unifix Cubes?
Unifix Cubes (also known as counting cubes or linking cubes) are colorful interlocking cubes. It can help children understand numbers and mathematical concepts. Each cube represents one unit and has an opening on one side, which can connect or interlock with another cube. They are my little girl’s favorite math manipulatives. Teachers, parents, and educators typically use the cubes to aid in the development of various mathematical and fine motor skills in children. You will especially see or use them at a math center!

What’s different between Unifix Cubes and other Counting cubes?
Similarities
- The material of Unifix cubes is similar to other popular blocks. All are produced from a soft plastic with round edges that make them safer for smaller kids. Moreover, you won’t be seriously injured if you accidentally step on one!
- All counting blocks are available in various colors, similar sizes, and are generally affordable.
Differences
- Unifix cubes have flat sides and only one connector. This means they can only be connected in straight lines. There are corner cubes that will allow you to connect at right angles, but most will just link up or down. This makes them unidimensional, which can help keep the kids focused on math and less on the building.
- Many users state that pulling the Unifix Cubes apart is easier than others. This is due to the large connector and expanded hole at the bottom. Modifications make it easier for younger kids with less fine motor control or limited dexterity.
- The Unifix cubes have many different variations, such as:
a) Larger “Jumbo Unifix Cubes,” which are great for younger kids
b) Various bases, magnetic charts, cube holders, and more to go with different lessons and concepts
c) Corner cubes for making 90-degree turns
d) Letter and reading cubes for language arts integrations and work
