Looking for a fun fine motor activity for February? Then check out these adorable Valentine Pom Pom Mats! Children will have to use their pincer grip to pick up the pom poms and their visual perception to place them in the right spot. You can have them do this on or off the mat. Throw in my favorite tools for more fine motor strengthening activities!
Valentine Pom Pom Mats
I have had wonderful feedback on our recent activity mats. You guys LOVED the Valentine Lego Mats and in keeping with the theme of centers and hands on fine motor activities, I came up with these fun Pom Pom Mats. I will be creating them for other seasons and celebrations. Also, don’t forget to do the easy Valentine science experiment skittles activity. They would also be great for your kids play trays too.
To get started, print out the pages that you want. Then laminate them or put them in dry erase pocket sleeves. This will allow children to trace the words and numbers while still keeping the activity reusable.
If you do not have Pom poms, these pom poms work great. I also have these from Lakeshore Learning that work well too.
I highly suggest you get a set of these fine motor tools. I use them for EVERYTHING. They go in our sensory bins, in our tray activities, etc. They are truly versatile. You can also use tongs or tweezers that you have at home.
I have included two different difficulty cards. One includes the number of how many pom pom’s of each color are required. This is good for younger children who are working on counting and number identification. They can then trace the numbers too. Older children may want to see if they can count the right amount of colors. Some children will choose to keep aside the correct number of pom pom’s before getting started. Others, will just grab them as they go. There’s no right or wrong way.
You want to just make sure they are having fun and enjoying it. Put on some happy or classical music and make it a fun time.
You can have children build these designs OFF the mat and glue them to a separate piece of card stock paper. it can be a craft project.
Here we did the activity printing in full. If your pom poms are a lot smaller, consider printing two pages per sheet like I did below:
Pom pom’s are great to have around the house. They can be used in many different ways, including in recycled crafts for toddlers.
