Whale Activities for Kids
Whales are some of the most amazing animals in the ocean, and learning about them can be fun! They are the largest animals on Earth and can swim for thousands of miles! They have their own special way of talking to each other, are super smart and extremely social.
Whether you’re completing a ‘W is for Whale’ week, working on a whale theme, having a whale-themed party, or sprinkling some whale activities into an ocean unit, there are plenty of ways to make learning about whales fun and engaging.
I recommend adding a whale craft preschool activity as an addition to Preschool Summer Activities or Ocean Activities for Preschoolers. You can plan trips to the aquarium or the seaside to see marine life up close. Take a trip to an aquarium or the seaside to see marine life up close during the summer.
Discuss the different types of whales, their features, characteristics and fun facts to make it more exciting. I also like to look up the best time for whale watching near us!

How to Make a Whale Craft
This whale craft is an easy activity that includes a free printable template. Kids will follow a step-by-step guide to make a whale craft in 6 easy steps.
All the pieces of the whale are labeled in the printable PDF for your convenience! Simply cut out the pieces, follow the instructions, glue them, and create your own whale in no time.
- Prep the Body: Cut out the large oval-like shape. This is the body of your whale. Glue your whale onto a piece of cardstock paper that serves as the background.
- Add the tail: Cut out the right and left pieces that make up the tail. Glue it at the bottom of the whale’s body so that it sticks out.
- Give your whale some flippers: These are the ‘hands’ of this majestic mammal and go on the right and left side of the whale.
- Add a fin-tastic fin: Glue the fin right at the top of the whale’s head.
- Give it a face: Cut and glue the whale’s face onto its body.
- Lastly, add eyes: Glue the whale’s eye onto its face and the craft is now complete!
Whale Craft Tips
If you are completing the craft activity with younger kids, cut out all the pieces of the whale ahead of time for them. Preschoolers can use a safe scissors and opt to cut out all the pieces first or cut each piece as they go along.
Both color and black and white options are included in the PDF template. The color version is adorable for use with younger kids or ideal for a quick activity. The black and white version is engaging as kids can color in the whale pieces and express their creativity.
Decorate the craft activity by adding fun elements to make it more exciting. My favorites are googly eyes and glitter. Create your background by sticking the whale craft to blue cardstock, and drawing drops of water, splashes, and waves. Alternatively, add a popsicle stick to the back to create whale puppets!
Younger kids can also get involved so they do not feel left out. Once complete, laminate the whale and cut out a few pieces of the completed craft. Then put them into an ocean sensory bin and let the kids find, count, and try to piece them back together.
