This is a great activity for those cold winter days when you’re stuck indoors and a fun resource to add to your winter printables. Here are more free winter-themed activities for your little ones to enjoy: How to Draw a Snowflake, How to Draw a Snowman, and Winter Color By Number.

Benefits of Winter I Spy
- It is a game that can be made to suit all ages.
- It helps children improve their spatial awareness by being more aware of their surroundings or, in this case, what is happening around them. They will start to pay more attention and see what is associated with winter.
- It helps improve their vocabulary.
- It helps a child make sense of what they observe.
In a study conducted amongst first graders assessing whether I Spy helps improve vocabulary mastery, it was found that students’ test scores increased after the I Spy game technique was applied. This shows that playing the game does help improve a child’s vocabulary and command of the language they are learning.
Different Ways to Use the I Spy Printable
If you don’t feel like doing a typical cold-weather activity like sledding or ice skating, this calming printable worksheet is ideal. Plus, it’s low prep! Here’s how you can use it:

- Laminate the printable to reuse it. This is perfect for classrooms! P.S. If you don’t have access to a laminator, simply use dry-erase pockets which increase the lifespan of all crafts.

- Use it during winter break.
- Pull it out at a holiday party
- Give it to your early finishers. Everyone in the community of educators knows that we encounter these in every grade!

Free Printable Winter I Spy
Yes, this is one of our many free resources and includes an easy, medium, and difficult Winter I Spy version to choose from, making it suitable for all ages.
Even on a dreary winter day when the windows are covered in frost, your little ones will be engaged and excited.
We also created a colored version AND a black-and-white version. The black and white version lasts longer because the kids have to color in the pictures. I prefer that and suggest splitting the activity: first color and then play the game, or color in the pictures as they find them.
The activity also targets counting skills because the kids have to see how many of each item they can find. It also improves their fine motor and writing skills!
If you don’t want to print the activity out, you can also let the kids complete it digitally. It’s not as fun, but if you’re in a bind, it’s a lifesaver!
Is it looking challenging? Don’t worry; we also have an answer key available!
