Preschool Transportation Theme
A transportation unit is a good idea for so many reasons. I always prefer to use a theme in my classroom that will jump-start a child’s excitement and gear them toward skills development outcomes and goals. A transportation preschool theme does just that!
This theme is so simple and easily relatable! Little kids are often fascinated by anything that moves and transport is an important part of daily life. Completing preschool transportation activities will help them gain a better understanding of the world around them, learn about the different modes of transportation, and how people and goods move from place to place.
The foundation of a child’s vocabulary development begins in kindergarten and pre-k. These transportation activities for preschoolers pave the road for vocabulary and language development. Kids will learn many new words and can adapt them into their daily conversations which will help communicate more effectively.
Be ready for them to be CURIOUS! Kids love learning about how things work and the best way to develop their understanding and foster curiosity and creativity is through fun transportation activities! Luckily, we have SO MANY resources on this theme to help you get started!
Lastly, it’s an excellent way to introduce basic math, literacy and science concepts. Kids will learn so many complex ideas and skills but in a way that is appropriate and understandable to them.

Here are some of the key preschool skills we aim to help you help your kids develop with these transportation activities for preschoolers:
- Literacy: Identify letters of the alphabet, practice letter tracing, develop vocabulary skills, learn beginning sounds and identify words.
- Math: Count to 10, write, and identify these numbers.
- Fine motor skills: Trace, play and craft to enhance fine motor skills, improve coordination, dexterity, and pave the way for pre-writing.
- Visual perception: Match and sort to facilitate problem-solving and improve visual discrimination.
This transportation-themed resource creates a hands-on interactive learning experience for children and is a valuable tool for early skills development.
Simply gather your general supplies and print each activity. You could also laminate certain activities for increased durability and to reuse them at a later stage.
Both color and black and white PDFS are included where possible to suit your individual printing needs.
While a color-copy PDF can make it easier, I recommend opting for the black-and-white option for some activities. This adds an extra component to each activity: coloring and getting creative! It also occupies the kids for a longer time.
Check out my list of supplies to see what we recommend for use. Minimal prep is required for most of the activities.
These are hands-on activities to which you can always add a fun twist. For this park the cars activity, laminate the cards and hide them in a transportation theme sensory bin. You can also create your own ‘parking lot’ using a cardboard box – just use some black and white paint to mark off lines.
