Are you ready to snuggle down and watch some family-friendly Halloween movies that everyone can enjoy? The great thing about these Halloween movies for kids is that they’re a great blend of a “little” spooky with a tad bit of scary. Pop up some popcorn and snuggle up. Movie night is the best! We have a lot of family Halloween traditions including our Halloween book nook ( learn How to create a Halloween Book Nook here). You can find more of these traditions here: Halloween Activities For Families + Kids.
We do a lot of crafts and activities too (see Halloween Activities for Kids of All Ages.) Because it’s always a good idea to be festive and fun during this time.
The Importance of Family Movie Time
We do try to limit our screen time as much as possible but there’s just something awesome about snuggling up for a family movie. Everyone tends to quiet down, get excited, and just genuinely enjoy being together soaking up the fun.
We also like to make up some fun treats to share with each other too. Popcorn is always a hit but I’m a big fan of pizzas and other simple snacks, also.
Are all Halloween Movies scary?
They aren’t and this is what makes this holiday so fun. Don’t get me wrong, there are some movies out there that are super scary. But we stay away from those.
The kids don’t like them, we don’t like them, and why put that in our brains our thoughts? We try to keep our family Halloween movies for kids low key and fun to watch.
As you’ll see from the list below, some are cartoons and some aren’t but all are certain to be a good time for the kids and family.

11 Halloween Movies for Kids to Watch This Halloween
While there are many more Halloween movies for kids out there to watch, these are the ones that make it on our list! We’ve seen them all and we love having a binge night once we’re done with trick-or-treating fun.
Hocus Pocus
PG Rating
Talk about a Halloween classic. Not a cartoon but a movie that everyone needs to see. Because once they see the Sanderson sisters once, they’re going to want to watch it over and over again. The basis of this Halloween movie is about bringing back witches that are after stealing the souls of children. (this can be a bit scary as well so it’s good to have a heads up)
This movie dives into the spookiness of Halloween and does have several scary parts. There is a bit of language in parts, too and if your child doesn’t like zombies, there are quite a few scenes with one rising from the grave. (He turns out to be a good guy but still.)
Casper
PG Rating
There’s a lot of happiness and friendliness in this movie. Casper falls in love with the main girl but due to his life and situation, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be able to work.
He really is a friendly ghost. There’s nothing scary about him and in all reality, you might form a soft spot in your heart for him!
Nightmare Before Christmas
PG Rating
This movie has a Pumpkin King that becomes quite bored with their yearly traditions of Halloween fun. So when he finds out that a place like Christmas exists, he can’t wait to explore and find a way to combine the two.
This movie combines the fun of Christmas with the spooky of Halloween and it’s a classic cartoon that is certain to be showing on TVs all around the world.
Hotel Transylvania 1, 2 and 3.
PG Rating
I had to pair these up together because they need to be watched in order. Even though there are monsters here, they’re not scary at all!
Count Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) Hotel Transylvania is a lavish resort where monsters can go to be themselves without humans around to interfere with them. Dracula invites monster and spooks to come to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez). But suddenly, a human somehow ends up in the hotel and falls in love with his daughter. This movie is hilarious with the right amount of monster vibes and can be watched again and again.
Coraline
PG Rating
With a bit of spookiness in part due to a hidden door, there is a lot of adventure and wonder in this film. The problem with the parallel door is that there is another family on the other side that wants to keep her there.
(Another great movie that is a bit unique in the format and display. There are parts of this movie that the kids might get a little spooked out by so it’s good to be prepared.)
Ghostbusters
PG Rating
Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! When a team of old professors makes it their mission to stop the ghosts that are plaguing the city to stop them in their tracks, there is more than one way to get rid of ghosts.
(There is a scene at the end of the movie that is a bit scary so you might want to watch it beforehand if you’re worried about your child being scared.)
Addams Family Values
PG-13 Rating
This movie is great for family fun. The entire Addams family household is doing everything they can during this movie to stop Uncle Fester from marrying his new “love”, Debbie.
The Babysitters Guide to Monster Hunting
PG Rating
When high schooler, Kelly, agrees to take on a babysitting gig on Halloween night, she suddenly finds herself part of a society of babysitters who have a mission to protect kids that have special powers. But protect them from what exactly?
(My kids loved this movie and it was a hit for all ages.)
Halloweentown
G Rating
When a little girl learns that she’s a witch just like her grandma, they have to figure out a way to save Halloween so that the tradition doesn’t die.
The Haunted Mansion
PG Rating
Talk about a simple family vacation gone bad! Staying at a haunted mansion overnight during their trip is actually just part of their problems. Will they be able to break the haunted curse?

PG Rating
When teen Zach moves next door to Hannah, he’s surprised to find out her father is the famous author R.L. Stine. While he’s known for writing scary books, he’s about to see those books come to life very, very soon.

Based on a Roald Dahl book and reimagined by acclaimed filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, The Witches is a fun adventure about a young boy who stumbles onto a secret coven of child-hating witches. These witches are plotting on how to turn the world’s children into mice.
