Importance of Learning the Alphabet
- For young students, seeing letters in written form might be confusing. Furthermore, along with learning the letter names, you want your child to relate the sound of each letter to its written form by learning the letter sounds.
- Knowing the sounds associated with each letter of the alphabet helps children lay a solid basis for several tasks including reading to writing. It also fosters confident learners.
- Learning the alphabet is a developmental milestone for many children. This will come naturally to some children. Others, however, may find it more difficult.
- Learning the alphabet can be frustrating for children who are developing their working memory or who have deficits in their working memory. While this may be discouraging to see, don’t despair! There are ways to get around it.
- Begin working on the alphabet with your child when he or she is two or three years old. It’s important not to hurry them if they appear uncomfortable, disinterested, or back off. If this is the case, stick to simple activities like singing alphabet songs, reading alphabet books, and having magnetic letters on hand to play with until they’re ready for more sophisticated activities.

Ways to Teach Kids the Alphabet
Here are some creative ideas to help your little ones master the ABC’s.
- Sing alphabet songs: The visuals usually display objects that begin with each letter, and certain songs might also pronounce sounds. As toddlers and children progress from singing a song, they will learn to recite and point out the letters without the help of music.
- Do alphabet crafts: it’s such a fun way to learn about each letter of the alphabet through hands-on activities. You can easily use this as a great letter of the week craft idea!
- Play letter matching games: Try out our adorable Hibernation Alphabet Matching Activity. It’s a great addition to a Hibernation Unit this winter and helps kids differentiate between uppercase letters and lowercase letters.
- Read alphabet books: Look for alphabet books that have bright, colorful pictures with the letters printed in a large, bold font to make it as simple as possible for your child to memorize. Try reading alphabet books together during their bedtime routine to help your child associate reading and learning with positive feelings. By starting your child’s reading journey positively, you’re setting them up for success.
