Why is Name Recognition Important?
Are your kids fascinated by their names? Do they love pointing them out on name tags, tracing them in the sand, or proudly declaring, “That’s my name!”? There’s a good reason for this!
Names are deeply personal—they’re one of the first things children learn about themselves and a key part of their identity. Your kids might even ask, “What’s so special about names?”
Engaging in name activities helps kids develop important early literacy skills, like recognizing, spelling, and writing their names. It is also important for building relationships, improving social skills, and even for safety in emergencies. For teachers, knowing each student’s name is key to creating an inclusive and supportive classroom environment. It shows each child that they matter and helps build a healthy, safe space for learning.
Snowman Name Craft
This is one of my favorite winter activities for preschoolers. It’s so easy to prep the name snowman and kids absolutely love it. We learnt how to draw a snowman using a free drawing guide, and practiced counting skills with this Winter I Spy Printable Game. Now we’re excited to build our own snowman!
Supplies
You will need a few supplies that you most likely already have on hand! Here’s what you’ll use;
- Cardstock or white construction paper– Use cardstock if you can because it’s sturdier.
- Glue stick
- Scissors

Instructions
This activity is easy prep and can be used at home, in classrooms, and for literacy centers. It’s a perfect activity to complete with your child as a bonding activity. I also have two options available in the PDF template so you can pick the one that suits your preferences.
1. Grab your template and print it out
There are two templates:
- The first is partially editable which allows you to type your child’s name and edit the letters in the snowman’s body before printing it out.
- The second is a blank snowman and circles, perfect for handwriting practice and larger groups. This activity is more hands-on. My kids prefer it because they love writing out the letters of their names by themselves.
2. Cut out the pieces and write out the letters
This part is where all the fun happens. The activity improves letter recognition and letter identification, and the kiddos can work on some fine motor skills by cutting. Younger kids like kindergarten students may require more assistance at this stage. To make it easier, try pre-cutting the snow ball circles for them and mixing up the letters of their name. This way, they can focus on arranging the letters in the correct order without struggling with cutting.
I like to have an alphabet chart stuck on the board which they can refer back to if needed
3. Assemble and glue the pieces
This activity is a true test of visual-spatial skills. Show the kids how to place one snowball on top of the other and let them stick and assemble it.
To add an element of math, kids can count the number of letters in their names. They can also count each others’ and this will spark some interesting discussion points. Have them try to read each child’s name to improve their literacy skills.
Now they have a new winter friend!
Tips and Tricks
This Snowman Name Craft Activity is low prep and a blast! There are a few more ways to make it even cooler! Here’s how:
- Take a sheet of blackboard and using a circle punch, create black dots. The kids can stick these onto the snowman.
- You can also use any other decorations. My daughter used some yarn to create a ‘scarf’ and it looked adorable. Use googly eyes, pom poms or stickers. Your kids might also love this Do you want to build a Snowman Craft?
- Display each child’s name snowman template on an adorable bulletin board. It can also be stuck on their room door at home.
- Discuss uppercase and lowercase letters. Some kids were curious why only the first letter is uppercase.
- Add snowman to your list of winter seasonal words and have the kids practice the beginning sound and word as they complete the craft.
- Turn it into story time by having the kids create a story about their snowman and share it with the group.
- Instead of sticking the snowman onto cardstock, attach it to a stick and let the kids put on a puppet show.
